Day 2: Marangu Gate (1860m) to Mandara Hut (2700m)

After a hearty breakfast, you'll be picked up from your lodge in Moshi and transported to the Marangu gate to kick off your trek. Once the necessary paperwork is completed, your exciting journey through the dense rainforest begins. Amidst the lush vegetation, keep an eye out for glimpses of primates as you make your way towards the Mandara Hut. After a rewarding hike, take a well-deserved rest at the hut. If you're up for it, your guide can lead you to the Maundi Crater, offering breathtaking views of the Kenyan interior.

As the sun rises, fuel up with an early breakfast to kickstart your day. Departing from Mandara Hut, you'll soon ascend beyond the timberline, entering the expansive heath and moor zone. After approximately 4 to 6 hours of trekking, the distinctive silhouette of Horombo Hut will emerge on the horizon, nestled at an altitude of 3700m. From this vantage point, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views encompassing Mawenzi, Kibo, and the vast expanse of the Masai steppe.

Leaving the comfort of Horombo Huts behind, today's journey is both challenging and rewarding. The trail leads past the "Last Water Point" before ascending to the stark landscape known as the "saddle" – a barren plateau connecting the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. After a demanding trek of approximately 5 to 6 hours, you'll arrive at Kibo Hut, your lodging for the night. Here, an early evening meal awaits before an early night's rest, as tomorrow's ascent begins in the pre-dawn hours.

Today marks "The Big Day" – the summit stage. Your final ascent begins around midnight, an arduous journey that requires endurance and determination. Passing by the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the path steadily ascends towards the summit. As dawn breaks, you'll reach Gillman’s Point (5681m), the rim of Kilimanjaro's crater, where the sun's rays gradually warm the land. The chill of the night fades as you continue upwards, and after another 1 to 2 hours of hiking, you'll reach the majestic Uhuru Peak at 5895m. Upon your return to Kibo Hut, a comforting meal awaits, followed by a brief 1 to 2-hour rest before descending to Horombo Hut.

Continuing onward, you'll traverse through the enchanting tropical rainforest once more. After a total trekking time of 6 hours, you'll arrive back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). Here, bid farewell to your dedicated mountain guides before a short transfer returns you to your hotel in Moshi.
